Homemade Gluten-Free Naan: a traditional raised, flat bread that is gluten and egg free, with the option of being dairy free too. These are a great accompaniment to a meat or soup meal, a fantastic desert with honey or an early breakfast with nut butter and jelly.
Homemade Gluten-Free Naan
I was inspired to make this bread after learning the name Naan from Rashele’s co-worker. We’ve been eating bone broth soups a few times a week to help with digestion, and this raised flat-bread sounded like a welcome addition to that meal. While I started making the flat-bread, however, the family came into the kitchen for a late lunch and started heating up left-over soup. So, my plans changed, as they often do, because I was unable to make the bread quickly enough. As a result, I switched gears and started thinking about dinner.
Although the Homemade Gluten-Free Naan was a slight challenge because I adapted it from a traditional wheat recipe, with the help of Namaste Foods Gluten-Free, Organic Flour Blend each batch turned out nicely. I really wanted a light, airy, raised flat-bread with good texture. While I was cooking up the flats of bread, I got comments like, “Mom, that smells so good!” and “What’s cooking? That smell is making me hungry.” Those kinds of words are music to my ears! But they also usually mean a food raid is upcoming. When the teenagers started going for the bread, I had to direct them to the correct stack of Naan. “Please, don’t dig into that one! I’ve got to photograph it for the blog!” I said. Their first instinct was to grab the honey jar and drizzle the dark amber, sweet, gold liquid on top, making the bread into a pre-dinner dessert. The wonderful taste blended well with the aroma created from all the cooking.
I used my Homemade Yogurt (recipe coming soon) from goat milk in this recipe, but you could use Greek Yogurt or Coconut Yogurt if you want it dairy free. The bread comes together well in the mixer and is a small enough batch that I only used the paddle attachment on the KitchenAid mixer. Next time I’m sure I’ll double the batch, which means I’ll use the dough hook to mix it up. I store the extras in the refrigerator because there are no preservatives or added chemicals in these, making for a quick, healthy, satisfying snack at any time of the day.
The Homemade Gluten-Free Naan goes will with our Poultry Bone Broth Soup or Indian Curry-Spiced Ground Beef when topped with Earth Balance Organic Coconut Spread and fresh cilantro, or it makes for a great dessert with honey. Also, try it for breakfast with nut butter and jelly. Amazing!
